After Vijay Kumar's Olympic win, Hamirpur to have shooting range

SHIMLA: After Hamirpur lad Vijay Kumar won silver medal in London Olympics, Himachal Pradesh government on Tuesday announced to set up world class shooting range in Hamirpur to train youth in the shooting event.

Afer Vijay Kumar gave India its first silver in London Olympics, his father Subedar (retd) Banku Ram had demanded the shooting range to hone the skills of budding shooters. "State government should set up a shooting range in Hamirpur to have more players like Vijay to win medal for country in Olympics," said Banku Ram.

He wished shooting range in the state as he knew how expensive shooting as sports is. His son Vijay Kumar after joining Indian Army in the year 2001 had taken shooting as a profession in the year 2003. "Without government roviding facilities, budding talent would remain buried in the villages. My son was lucky as his talent was identified, shooting range would provide young ones from state a chance to show their talent," he added.

Banku Ram's wish was finally fulfilled on Tuesday when chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumalannounced to set up a shooting range with world class facilties in Hamripur. "Hamirpur district has set a new record with the winning of silver medal by Vijay Kumar from the district in ongoing London Olympics in shooting event.

Shooting range would provide the much needed boost to the shooting sport as youngsters would take inspiration from the Olympian Vijay Kumar to earn laurels to the nation and the state," Dhumal added. Dhumal said that the state government had announced a cash reward of Rs one crore to Vijay Kumar besides conferring 'Himachal Gourav' Award to him on Independence day function this month.
